Born in Canada and currently residing in the Netherlands, Graham Flett is composer adept at writing music for many different ensembles and situations. He has a natural inclination for being musically diverse and this is often shaped by the particular context from which a piece of his arises. His current work now reflects a refined containment of musical ideas, typically exploring the limits of an aesthetic within a given work.
Although from piece to piece the surface may vary, what emerges is a way of treating musical ideas and material. This approach is underscored by a strong formal organization as well as an overall refinement of material that is attune to the musical senses. Many of his works have an atmosphere of mystery and subtle humour, often complimented by the inclusion of theatrical ideas, linguistic elements and other forms of media.
He received a Master in Composition from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague and also holds a Bachelor in Fine Arts (music) from Toronto's York University. In addition to this he has received grants and awards from the Canada Council for the Arts and the SOCAN foundation, he was also a recipient of an honourable mention for the Jules Legar competiton (2010). He has worked with notable ensembles such as the ASKO Schoenberg, the Nieuw Ensemble, Ensemble Aleph, and Quatour Bozzini. Other commissions have included pieces
for Claron McFadden (with Remy van Kesteren), Het Gelders Orkest, Contact Contemporary Music, as well performances by the Klang Ensemble and Array Music. Mr. Flett has also has composed for unorthodox arrangements like melodica quartet and large groups of unusual instruments such as 20 out-of-tune pianos and harmoniums.
Upcoming works include a piece for the New European Ensemble and then to be followed by a commission for Modelo62 .
Graham Flett has been a student of a number of different composition teachers, including Gilius van Bergeijk, Cornelis de Bondt, Martijn Padding, Yannis Kyriakides, David Mott and James Tenney. Upcoming Phd studies in England will also add Michael Finnissy to this list.
